What customer numbers is
Names are a poor way to identify a customer. Two farms share a surname, a company trades under three names, and someone on the phone reads out a number that matches nothing. A customer number gives each customer a single reference that stays the same.
With customer numbers on, every new customer receives a number such as CUS-000001 automatically, however they arrive: typed in on a screen, brought in by an import, created when a lead is converted, or created through MDMS AI. The number appears on the customer list, the customer page, in search, and on the invoice PDF, so the person on the phone and the person with the invoice are reading the same thing.
Existing customers are not left out. An administrator runs a backfill that numbers them oldest first. Once a number is set it cannot be changed, which is the point: a reference that can be edited stops being a reference.
The number comes from a document number sequence, starts at CUS-000001 and is assigned on every path that can create a customer, so there is no side door that leaves a gap. For the office, the practical effect is a stable thing to say on the phone, to write on a job envelope and to search for. It is a reference only: it is not a login, an account balance or a payment account.

Customer numbers in a working day
A customer rings about an invoice and says only that it is for the Smith property. There are four. The counter asks for the customer number printed at the top of the invoice, types it into search, and lands on the right account on the first try. Before the backfill, the same conversation took a few minutes of guessing.
